مُساهمةموضوع: Ben’s New Therapy   الأحد ديسمبر 27, 2009 10:58 am

Ben enrolled in a special new therapy program at a therapy center called Free Motion Rehabilitation, in Howell NJ. The program is an intense therapy program that uses a European approach with unique equipment and methods. The therapy sessions are 3 1/2 hours per day, five days a week for three weeks straight.
The program began on December 19th, 2005 and continued through the holidays until January 6th. We decided to choose the busy holiday season as an effort to minimize the days Ben would miss school. Since Ben is off school for Christmas break he only missed two weeks of school instead of three. We also arranged for a few late afternoon sessions so that Ben could attend a few days of school in between for continuity.
The program involves stretching and strengthening excerises which are conducted using a variety of unique methods. A special cage called the Universal Exercise Unit is an essential part of the therapy. A method called spider cage therapy is conducted within this cage like set up. "Spider Cage" uses a system of harnesses and bungee cords attached to a belt worn by the child and anchored to different points of the partially enclosed large cage. The bungie cords are used to assist the therapist in positioning the child, and provide a unique hands free method that allows Ben to experience standing up without someone physically holding on to him. This method challenges the muscles and central nervous system in a unique way that provides an opportunity for the child to experiment with movements in a safe environment. The assisted movement and patterning provides an opportunity for Ben to help program his mind and muscles for balance and coordination.

A special Therasuit program which relies on a tightly fitted suit to provide input and posture will also be part of the program. The suit also uses special elastic bungie like cords that criss-cross across different sections of the body to provide support, input and positioning. The tight suit takes some getting used to, but Ben has a softer suit system called Thera-togs that he wears at home and school which provides a similar function.

The aggressive therapy program has had reported success in cases similar to Ben’s presentation. We look forward to making progress with this new therapy. Ben has done extremely well with the therapy and we intend to repeat the aggressive course as many as 4 times per year. The therapy is an expensive and trying endeavor but we are proud of how well Ben endures the long sessions and hope everyone will continue to cheer him through these difficult new challenges. We will continue to post updates and pictures of Ben’s progress in the [ندعوك للتسجيل في المنتدى أو التعريف بنفسك لمعاينة هذا الرابط] section of the website so please be sure to check in on how Ben is fairing with the all of his endeavors.
New Therapy Progress Report
Ben has completed his new intense therapy program. He has done amazingly well! During the entire 3 1/2 hour therapy sessions Ben is provided no more than a total of 15 minutes of downtime or rest. He had his moments where he would break down and cry as many as 3 times in a given session, but he recovers quickly and always manages to stay on track. Mom and Dad work hard to provide entertainment and distractions as a means to help motivate Ben during this difficult therapy course.
The therapist, Laura does an excellent job with Ben and manages to mix a balance of work and work disguised as fun. She begins each session with a 15-20 minute stretching and massaging treatment with heated blankets which all helped prepare Ben for the tough work out ahead. Ben then works through a series of exercises involving weights attached to pulleys in the Universal Exercise Unit or "Cage" that provide resistance and muscle isolation training. Sand bags are used to prevent him from moving other parts of his body to isolate specific muscles during specific tasks.
Ben then moves into a treatment room where he is dressed in the special TheraSuit suit that incorporates a unique system of bungie like cords hooked through loops on a suit system to help provide support. Ben cooperated very well with this very new experience…including wearing a special hat system that uses the same cords for head and neck control. We have nicked named the TheraSuit the Big Bird Suit….because it is yellow like Big Bird from Sesame Street…and helps distract Ben from the work out involved with the suit. Ben often worked on ladder rungs, sitting positions, sit-ups, push-ups on an elevated wedge, and work outs on a large therapy ball.

The last portion of each session is the Spider Cage. Ben suits up with a special large Belt harness system that has hooks around the waist that attach to Bungie cords that stretch out to hook onto the cage system. The system is also known as Spider Cage therapy…and it is an amazing site to behold. With the bungie/belt system Ben was able to experience free standing without "anyone" holding him. A large mirror was placed in front of him and he stood there looking at himself with pride and awe. Mom and Dad were often moved to tears inside…but held on to emotions to not distract Ben. Laura then worked Ben through a series of bouncing and balancing exercises that really worked Ben’s muscles. While the Spider Cage sessions are often the most fun…they are also some of the hardest work. The bungee cords do not do all of the work, and there is very minimal support at the trunk so Ben is required to do a lot of work to maintain balance.

Super Ben! I’m A Big Boy!
We are very encouraged by what we see in this new therapy program and have great hopes for progress. Laura, the therapist has been very pleased with Ben’s cooperation and endurance…and is always greatful that Mom and Dad provide motivation and entertainment for Ben. We hope Ben continues to cooperate and benefit from the therapy. Please visit the December 2005 section of [ندعوك للتسجيل في المنتدى أو التعريف بنفسك لمعاينة هذا الرابط] for further detailed accounts of this therapy. We have decided to take Ben for one 3 1/2 hour session per week on Fridays and then repeat a full 3 week course at the beginning of April. We are taking advantage of spring break so Ben will only miss two weeks of school again instead of three. It is difficult to take him out of school but the progress we have made with this therapy is encouraging and we feel it is important to Ben’s development. I have made some special videos of Ben’s progress in the therapy and they must be seen to be believed. By the end of the three week program Ben was able to sit unassisted on a bench while throwing therapy balls into a bag. It was beyond amazing. Even Laura was in awe of how well Ben was able to sit on that bench. Please visit this [ندعوك للتسجيل في المنتدى أو التعريف بنفسك لمعاينة هذا الرابط] link to view Ben’s progress. The following is a final summary of what the entire experience of this amazing therapy was like.
NO STRINGS ATTACHED

On January 6, 2006 Benjamin completed an intense therapy program at Free Motion Rehab in Howell New Jersey. Ben endured a three and a half hour session five days per week for three weeks. Each session involved massaging and stretching his muscles, strengthening exercises, and unique therapy systems knows as Spider Cage Therapy and Therasuit Therapy. Spider Cage uses a bungie cord system that provides an opportunity for the child to stand "unassisted" while practicing balance and movements. The Therasuit therapy involves a tight suit that uses elastic cords to provide sensory input and pulls the body into alignment.
Seeing Ben in the Spider Cage therapy for the first time brought on a flood of emotions. To see him standing there with out "anyone" holding him was such a sight to behold….And to see his face when he watched himself in the mirror…"standing" there…was beyond overwhelming. It’s kind of like witnessing a reverse Pinocchio theme. Here is this boy….hanging from these strings, like a puppet, but feeling less like a puppet and more like a boy then previously possible. Weeks into the therapy, as he learned to use those strings in conjunction with his own muscles to achieve strength balance and posture, he looked at himself in the mirror and said, "I big boy" ….but what I heard was, "I’m a real boy now."
On the second to last day of therapy, Ben was practicing sitting on a backless bench in the special Therasuit. After about half an hour of fighting to keep his balance the therapist took off the Therasuit and sat Ben back on the bench. What happened then was nothing short of a miracle. Ben sat up straighter then he ever has in his entire life. And not only did he sit on that bench, without any assistance, he also began throwing therapy balls at the wall and trying to get them in his bag. The strength and balance he exhibited was amazing. His therapist Laura and I watched in awe as we witnessed my boy playing ball on that bench with no strings attached. Yes Ben, you are a big boy now….no strings attached….you are a real boy now.

New Therapy Round 2
After Ben completed his intense three week therapy program he continued to attend the treatment once per week. On April 5, 2006 he entered his second full three week course. This Round 2 of therapy came on the heels of Ben’s 4th spinal tap so we were a bit worried he would be too sore to cooperate. We delayed the start of Round 2 for two days to give Ben extra recovery time and it paid off. The first day back for therapy he worked very hard and did not cry once. He was definitely very tired by the end of therapy but we kept him working right on through. We were excited to see that he was not upset to be back to this hard therapy. We are still able to convince him to work and mix the right balance of work disguised as play. We look forward to continued improvements in this second round of aggressive therapy. This new round of therapy was made possible by a very generous donation from the Knights of Columbus, Summit Council 783. Please follow this [ندعوك للتسجيل في المنتدى أو التعريف بنفسك لمعاينة هذا الرابط] link to learn about their extreme generosity.
